Rage mode on //I hate fucking DA and it's submission module! It Deleted all stuff I've already typed. Like when I lost half of progress on this pic due to hardware failure wasn't enough. >(( //rage mode off
So I'll be short this time. Art requested by "Twilight Sparkle as Herbert West: Reanimator, holding the glowing syringe in her hoof while behind her, Rainbow Dash's severed head screams on the operating table"
He gave me several ideas, But I've picked this one to draw simply because I love H. P. Lovecraft. So this picture is Grimdark as fuck and really wried in terms of colors and shadow. I even do not know Do I like it or not.
I KNOW THERE IS PINKIE PIE HEAD, NOT RAINBOW DASH. I simply can not hurt RD. Am I a cupcake monster? No. And PP here just makes everything clear!
Also I bet there will be not more than 80 favs to this picture :3
-------------------------------------- MLP (c) Hasbro Fim and it's characters by Reanimator (c) H. P. Lovecraft
The use of "Kirby dots" (or "Kirby krackle") within the background is a nice touch and gives the overall theme of the piece even more of a sci-fi/horror edge. The lineless look of the characters, along with the colors, match up to the show's style in a great way.
The expressions of the character are nicely done as well- Twilight's sinister smile at her dark concoction, along with those intensely-focused eyes, make her appear creepier as Herbert West than Jeffrey Combs did.
One thing that really stands out to me here is Pinkie Pie's disembodied zombie head. Her face isn't exactly horrifying or showing an emotion of fear, but rather rage, which considering the nature of the undead from "Re-Animator" is a great representation of what the terrible side effects of the reagent were. Also, the fact that this is the same sort of face Pinkie kept making towards Twilight in the episode, "Green Isn't Your Color", whenever she said, "FOR-EVERRR...!" is pretty hilarious.
While the green glow of the needle full of reagent is the main source of light, I feel that there would be more of an theatrical impact if you had made the glow a little more diverse. There seems to be more of a yellow light effect on both Twilight and Pinkie's faces than there is of a green coloring in relation to the needle's glow. It's almost as if there's an unseen candle in the room that's acting as another form of light. The one lower beaker closer to Twilight's hoof seems to reflect the contrast of the needle's glow more than the other objects which seem to be reflecting the said other light.
Other than that, great combination of a H.P. Lovecraft story and a cartoon. Can't wait to see what you'll tackle next regarding the ponies.
The composition is very well done. I particularly like how you applied the rule of thirds (whether intentionally or unintentionally) to Twilight’s head and Pinkie’s head. The line art is superb as well, and it matches that of the show too. The coloring is also very good – particularly your use of black to help create contrast.
If you ever do a second pass on it, then I’d make the entire composition reflect your lighting choice. I’m referring mainly to the table and scientific beakers set in the lower right hand side of the picture. If you created a contrast with these like you did with Pinkie and Twilight, then the artwork as a whole would feel more unified. I would also change the lighting to more green overall, so that it feels like the glowing needle is the only source of light. Right now it feels like there’s another light source somewhere in the room that we can’t see.
And as a personal opinion, I’d change Pinkie’s expression to be one of shock or fright – certainly not anger. For one thing, it doesn’t fit her character, but more importantly if any of us were in the same situation, we wouldn’t be angry – we’d be in horror!
Overall it’s a beautiful piece, filled with creativity! I can’t wait to see what you do next.
